Three layered air defense system : Iron Dome, David's Sling, Arrow System
Israel's air defense system not impenetrable : Right weapons and tactics could compromise it
US backing Israel : From 2011 to 2021, the United States contributed a total of US$1.6 billion to the Iron Dome defense system

The middle east has once again become the focal point of global attention and chaos as the world stands on the brink of catastrophe once again with new chapters unfolding in the Iran-Israel War. On 13th June Israel launched a surprise attack on multiple Iranian locations specifically targeting potential Iranian nuclear bases to obstruct US-Iran negotiations for easing economic sanctions. Fearing a rapid nuclear proliferation at the Iranian end with the acquisition of weapon grade Uranium, Israel launched a multipronged assault on Iranian bases causing a massive fatality of over 200. On the side of the assaulter, an estimated 17 civilian deaths have been recorded as Iran retaliated. However, according to recent updates, Israel’s famed Iron dome is faltering as it gets overwhelmed by the Iranian ballistic missiles.

Iron Dome is Failing

With an initial assault of more than 200 ballistic warheads Iran tried to overpower Israel’s air defense mechanism claimed IDF. While Israel was successful in intercepting most of the missiles, there is no doubt that Israel’s air defense mechanism is working overtime. Israel possesses a rock solid air defense system with three defense mechanisms serving as the custodians of Israel’s air space.

Why is the IRON DOME faltering ?

The Iron Dome which was jointly developed by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries was declared operational and deployed in 2011. Iran is now trying to overwhelm the defense mechanism by simultaneously engaging it in intercepting decoys and drones in addition to ballistic warheads claimed the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). On top of that, it has been reported that Israel is running dangerously low on 'Arrow' missile stocks. Securing Israel's air space is expensive business with each missile costing the treasury a whooping 1 million USD it is definitely not economical for Israel to drag on the war for too long. On the contrary, Iran spends only about a hundred thousand USD for each such launch. In the April skirmish the Iron Dome had done the heavy lifting, but this time the other systems took a fair share of the credit.

The nascent attacks of Thursday further made it clear that Israel's air defense mechanism isn't impenetrable, with the right weapons and tactics it could be overpowered. Iran has also heavily relied on ballistic missiles this time instead of the slow drones. Iran has set the goal of launching 1000 ballistic warheads on Israel. This goal which sounds quite ambitious, might see the day of light; especially when Israel is risking its air space to overt aerial assaults.

What are the missiles used by Iran ?

Iran has resorted to using hypersonic missiles to cause massive annihilation in Israel targeting some of the major cities like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. It is important to note that Iran's hypersonic missile Fattah 1 has successfully pierced through the famed Iron Dome of Israel raising eyebrows of the global community of defense experts.

Khaybar Shekan
Khaybar Shekan: solid-fueled medium range ballistic missile with a length of 10.5m capable of piercing through the famed THAAD air defense system. Can carry a high explosive payload of upto 500kg. Has a speed of 16 machs.
Haj Qassem
Haj Qassem: Named after Irans former IRGC Commander Qasem Soleimani who was assasinated by the US froces this missile is capable of carrying warheads weighing upto 500 kg and has as range of 1800 Km. Speed mach 12 at re-entry and mach 5 at impact

On Sunday, Iran has claimed to have fired two somewhat new models, the Haj Qassem and Qassem Bashir missiles, able of overpowering the finest air defense systems including US-made Patriot system and Israeli missile shields.

The silent allies : In the initial strike a swarm of 100 'shahed-136' attack drones were launched by Israel which were successfully intercepted in the Jordanian and Saudi airspace indicating a more complex multi-domain attack strategy.

The DOOMSDAY Plane was made operational in the 1980's and was last flown on high alert preceding the 9/11 attack. Officially known as the National Airborne Operations Center (NAOC) this plane is equipped with very low frequency (VLF) and high frequency antennas for global communication even during nuclear conflicts.

Another important highlight of the last couple of days is that the US has increased its military presence in the middle-east. The CENT-COM is on high alert and the USS Carl Vinson has been patrolling the Arabian Sea.
