The ongoing war in the Middle East has reached a new breaking point as news of an impending nuclear attack on Iran is gaining traction. According to sources, Tehran has claimed that one of its major nuclear facilities was struck during joint military operations by the US and Israeli forces. This claim has, however, been refuted by the IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, who observed no visible spike in radiation in the countries bordering Iran. He has further confirmed that there are no confirmed signs of the release of nuclear materials.

Interim Ayatollah Dead?

Tensions have once again reached the tipping point with unverified claims of the interim 'Ayatollah' of Iran, Ayatollah Arafi, being killed in an airstrike. Alireza Arafi, who was a senior cleric and a long-time insider in Iran's politico-religious establishment, was selected as Supreme Leader of the regime the same day Khammeinei was assassinated, but unverified social media posts and news reports claim that he has met the same fate as his predecessor. However, the pattern of initial silence and denial followed by Tehran surrounding Khammeini's own assassination has made it extremely difficult to speculate and take a firm stand on the matter, separating fact from rumour amidst this crisis.

Iran is now governed by an Interim Leadership Council to temporarily handle the duties of the Supreme Leader. Arafi, who has been a member of the Guardian Council since 2020, now sits alongside President Massoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje'i in the Leadership Council.

Iranian Strikes reported on Saudi and Qatar, as Kuwait shoots down US jets in 'friendly fire'

New reports confirm Iranian strikes on Saudi territory, with mounting speculation centring on a potential hit to a key oil refinery. Some operational units at the refinery were temporarily shut down as a precaution, but this didn’t affect the supply of petroleum products to local markets,” an official from the ministry shared in a statement released by the Saudi Press Agency. It's noteworthy that the Ras Tanura complex is home to one of the largest refineries in the Middle East, boasting a capacity of 550,000 barrels per day. Qatar has also halted liquid natural gas production after taking hits from Iran on key facilities. Qatari LNG production is equivalent to about 20% of global supply and plays a major role in balancing both Asian and European markets' demand for the fuel.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed that the Kuwaiti air defense inadvertently shot down three US F-15 fighter jets flying in Iran related operations yesterday.

“During active combat-that included attacks from Iranian aircraft, ballistic missiles, and drones – the U.S. Air Force fighter jets were mistakenly shot down by Kuwaiti air defenses,” CENTCOM said, further stating that the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

The spark leading to a wildfire

As the massive uprising in Iran has turned it into a geopolitical powder keg, the volatility of the current regime harbours significant implications for India should it falter. History has remained witness to the fact that nature abhors a vacuum, implying that Iran’s current situation can potentially become the contesting arena for three key political power-figures.

Back in January this year, the name of Reza Pehlavi, the so-called ‘Crown Prince’ of Iran resurfaced, with him openly calling out the masses in protest against the current theocratic regime. His renewed visibility has prompted speculations among experts about his possible return to hold the reins of Tehran. Pehlavi, who is widely seen as a pro-American, has reiterated his commitment to advance democracy, but the principlists fear that he might recast Iran as a client state. He is rivalled by two other stalwarts, namely: Syed Hossain Moussavian and the former President Hasan Rouhani.

Earlier this week, Pehlavi was seeing posting a congratulatory message on X, where he was seen exhorting the Iranian civillians to rise up in rebellion and help reinstate Iran to its former glory while stating that the death of 'criminal' Khammeini must have assuaged many 'wounded hearts'. In this tweet he further said that any attempt by the remnants of the regime to appoint a successor to Khamenei is doomed to failure in advance.

Strait of Hormuz closed

In a perilous escalation of the burgeoning U.S.-Iran conflict, the Strait of Hormuz global oil's indispensable artery now stands effectively shuttered. IRGC vessels broadcast VHF warnings like "no ship allowed," halting most traffic; 17+ oil tankers persist amid threats to ignite passersby. It's important to note here that, despite formal legal closure the IRGC has paralyzed commerce through raw intimidation.

Gulf monarchies are bracing themselves as President Trump commits to a lengthy campaign, with the echoes of partial Hormuz chokeholds reminiscent of February's nuclear talks drill. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported Monday that two additional vessels were struck, one of which was a tanker in proximity to Muscat, Oman and the other was near Mina Saqr, UAE. As of last week, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration issued separate advisories warning vessels to avoid the Strait of Hormuz and the broader Gulf of Oman.

The strait handles about 20 million barrels of oil daily roughly 20% of global consumption and 20% of LNG trade, mainly from Qatar. Closure removes this supply abruptly, pushing Brent crude prices above $100 per barrel within days and risking industrial shutdowns in Asia and Europe.
