A 13 year old girl in Hazaribagh has been brutally killed by her own mother in the name of religion, “balidan,” or sacrifice for her son's cure. Reports mention that a tantrik and women's lover was involved in the murder. The son was likely suffering from physical and mental illness.

About the Hazaribagh Murder
The horrific murder in Hazaribagh was reported on Wednesday, wherein a 13 year old girl was killed by her mother on the advice of a tantrik as a sacrifice to cure her son.
The tantrik claimed that the girl's murder would be most auspicious, as the girl was believed to be in the possession of a goddess. The girl was killed on March 24, the day that was celebrated as Durga Ashtami.
The Hazaribagh police has now arrested the three accused who misled the police informing them of rape. Further investigations continue while the Post Moterm confirms it to be a murder.

Girl Murdered in the Name of Sacrifice
The tantrik inserted a wooden stick into the 13 year old girl while the mother's lover held her head to collect blood for the sacrifice. She was strangled by the lover, who had been in a relationship with the woman for ten years while her husband remained unaware of their affair.
The tantrik had asked her mother to sacrifice a "virgin girl" to cure her son. This case, committed in the name of sacrifice, is a brutal murder of a teenage girl born out of the blind faith that is becoming increasingly common.
Is this the Only Case of Blind Faith?
Blind faith in the name of sacrifice and purity has led to rapes and assaults, costing the lives of many girls. The recent case of the Nashik godman has led to monetary fraud and assaults against many women. The NCRB data shows that witch practices against women still continue, and there were 74 deaths in India as of 2025.
