New Delhi witnessed a major protest over India’s reservation system on Friday, August 21, as supporters of the Reservation Hatao Andolan gathered at Jantar Mantar despite police restrictions at the site. The demonstration brought renewed attention to the long-running debate over caste-based reservation, merit and economic criteria in government support. The protest later took a tense turn, with more than 50 protesters detained by Delhi Police as authorities moved to clear the gathering.

Reservation Hatao Andolan Protest and Key Demands

The protesters called for major changes to India’s existing reservation system. One of their key demands was that economic conditions should play a greater role in determining eligibility for government assistance, rather than caste being the primary criterion.

They argued that government support should reach economically disadvantaged people regardless of their caste or religion. Protesters also raised concerns about reservation in education and government jobs and called for greater emphasis on merit-based admissions and recruitment.

Some demands also included reducing the requirement to disclose caste information in public forms, job applications and educational processes under a proposed “One Nation, One Identity” approach. Protesters further raised concerns about UGC-related rules and sought changes to existing higher-education policies.

Jantar Mantar Protest and Police Restrictions

The major point of contention was the venue of the demonstration. Delhi Police had clarified before the protest that permission had not been granted for a protest, procession or assembly at Jantar Mantar. Instead, authorities issued a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for a peaceful Reservation Hatao Andolan gathering at Ramlila Ground, with a maximum of 500 participants and permission until 4 pm.

The NOC also placed restrictions on a procession and staying beyond the approved conditions. However, protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar and remained there despite police directions to use the alternative venue.

The Week reported that police deployed a heavy security presence at the site and that protesters refused to shift to Ramlila Ground.

More Than 50 Protesters Detained in Delhi

According to reports published on August 22, Delhi Police subsequently detained more than 50 people as the gathering continued at Jantar Mantar.

The detention followed the disagreement over the protest venue and the police restrictions. The development became one of the major talking points surrounding the Reservation Hatao Andolan, bringing further attention to the protesters’ demands and the administration’s handling of the gathering.

Reservation Debate Returns to National Spotlight

The protest has once again put India’s reservation policy under the national spotlight. Supporters of the existing system argue that caste-based reservation is intended to address historical discrimination and continuing social inequalities in education and employment.

Critics, including participants in the Reservation Hatao Andolan, argue that economic hardship should receive greater consideration and that opportunities should be based more strongly on merit and individual circumstances.

The issue is particularly significant in the education sector, where reservation policies affect admissions and opportunities in higher education. The protesters’ demands concerning UGC policies have added an education-related dimension to the demonstration.

Reservation Reform Debate Continues

The detention of protesters has intensified discussion surrounding the movement, while the disagreement over the protest venue has raised questions about balancing the right to peaceful assembly with restrictions imposed to maintain public order.

With reservation remaining one of India’s most sensitive social and political issues, the Reservation Hatao Andolan has brought the question of reservation reform, economic-based criteria and merit-based opportunities back into public discussion.

The protesters’ demands and the government’s approach to reservation policy are likely to remain closely watched as the debate continues.
