Some of Delhi's busiest shopping hubs including Khan Market and Connaught Place stayed closed yesterday amid protests by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and INDIA bloc members. With demonstrations drawing heavy security deployment and authorities warning that tensions could escalate, traders chose to keep their shutters down.

They say the repeated disruptions are causing mounting losses and raising fears of damage to shops, property and vehicles. The closures have left shoppers and tourists with fewer options in central Delhi, and have put a fresh spotlight on how Delhi protests affect small businesses.

Khan Market and Connaught Place Remained Closed

According to ANI, Khan Market traders decided on their own to shut the market. Association president Sanjiv Mehra said Khan Market is often among the first areas affected when protesters are stopped nearby, which raises the risk of damage. Vice President Brij Gopal Khosla added that shopkeepers did not want to take chances after an advisory warned that the situation could worsen.

In Connaught Place, New Delhi Traders Association president Atul Bhargav said the market would also stay shut. He explained that protests by INDIA bloc members around the area over the past four to five days have caused road closures, traffic jams and public inconvenience. He also said the CJP had announced a protest but was reportedly not granted permission, so authorities advised traders to remain closed as a precaution.

The financial toll is significant. Mehra estimated that a single day's closure can cost a shop around Rs 1 to 1.5 lakh. Rent, staff salaries and other fixed costs continue even when shops are shut, and sellers of perishables such as fruit and groceries face extra wastage.

Khan Market Traders Association President Sanjiv Mehra said the traders decided on their own to keep the market closed. He mentioned:

We decided ourselves to keep it shut. Khan Market is among the first markets affected when protesters are stopped nearby, raising fears of damage to shops and property. Businesses in markets such as Khan Market, Connaught Place and South Extension face high costs, including rent and salaries, even when shops remain closed.

Traders are urging political parties to review their approach and hold peaceful protests away from busy commercial areas, so that livelihoods are not disrupted. Business owners in other markets, including South Extension, face similar cost pressures.

Visitors are advised to check market status before heading out expect traffic diversions near Connaught Place and follow official advisories for updates.
