An increase of 3% in the rates of DA for central government employees and DR for pensioners has been sanctioned by the Union Cabinet. This will definitely benefit both the employees as well as the pensioners in dealing with the increasing cost of living. The increase will take effect from 1 July 2026.
As per the press release by Press Information Bureau (PIB), this decision will bring about an increment in the rate of DA from 60% to 63% of the basic pay, while pensioners will get the benefit of the increase in the rate of DR in the ratio of 63% of the basic pension.
DA Hike 2026: Key Details
The newly announced hike will benefit approximately 48.54 lakh employees working in the central government and 68.71 lakh retirees. The estimated cost to the government for one year will be approximately ₹10,016.10 crore.
This hike comes after the existing formula according to the recommendation of the Seventh Central Pay Commission. The government usually hikes the DA and DR twice a year for the welfare of the employees and pensioners due to the inflation effect on their expenditures.
Salary and Pension Benefits
Dearness Allowance is calculated as a percentage of an employee's basic salary. Therefore, the additional amount varies according to the individual's basic pay. For instance, an employee who earns a basic salary of ₹30,000 will be entitled to an extra ₹900 per month because of the increase of 3%.
Likewise, an individual who is earning a basic pension of ₹20,000 will get an extra ₹600 per month owing to the revised Dearness Relief percentage. As the new rates have become effective from 1st July, therefore, both the employees and pensioners can also claim arrears for the same period as well.
DA Rates Under the Fifth and Sixth Pay Commissions
The government has also revised allowance rates for employees covered under older pay commission structures. For employees under the Sixth Central Pay Commission framework, the DA rate has increased from 262% to 269% of basic pay. Under the Fifth Central Pay Commission framework, the rate has increased from 483% to 497%. These revised rates are also effective from July 1, 2026. The applicable increase depends on the employee's pay structure and service rules.
8th Pay Commission Update
The latest DA hike is separate from the proposed salary restructuring under the Eighth Central Pay Commission. The commission is expected to examine government salaries, allowances and pensions before submitting its recommendations.
However, the latest decision does not change the existing basic-pay structure. Any future revision will depend on the commission's recommendations and the government's subsequent decisions. The final fitment factor and implementation timeline for the revised pay structure have not yet been announced.
DA Hike to Provide Inflation Relief
The hike from 60% to 63% is aimed at assisting in handling the increasing cost of living for central government employees and pensioners. Under the new scheme that will be effective from July 2026, eligible persons will get additional compensation based on the existing pay commission formula. The government expects that about 1.17 crore persons will benefit from this move, costing the government roughly ₹10,016 crore per year.
