Gen Z turned celebrity silence into a public accountability test. During the NEET protests, support, neutrality, and delayed statements all affected public perception and social media followings.
An Instagram page called the Cockroach Janta Party crossed 3 million followers within 78 hours of launch in May. Within five days it had passed 10 million, overtaking BJP's own account. By late July it had 22 million, faster growth than any Indian political party has managed, real or satirical. The page which initially grew out of anger over the NEET paper leak, after India's chief justice compared unemployed youth to cockroaches turned out to be the biggest and most unique protest of students in the history. They camped at Jantar Mantar for over a month, protested on ground and social media ended with resignation of education minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Bollywood split into two camps almost right away. Shabana Azmi did not just tweet in support of protest, also she showed up at the protest site. Sonakshi Sinha, Imran Khan, Prakash Raj, Naseeruddin Shah, Huma Qureshi and Preity Zinta spoke early too. Then there were the stars who chose to remain silent or limited their response to generic calls for peace without acknowledging the students' concerns. Gen Z took notice, and this time, that silence came with consequences.

Katrina Kaif's fan page with over 70,000 followers shut itself down entirely, telling its own audience that the actress had betrayed them by staying quiet. Kaif's Instagram following dipped soon after (source- filmibeat), R. Madhavan got hit with a wave of Gayab, meant missing, memes after FTII students plastered posters outside his office asking where he had gone. Preity Zinta and Salman Khan were mocked for statements read as too careful, and an old Amitabh Bachchan clip about tear gas resurfaced, with people calling him a chameleon.
Alia Bhatt, Madhavan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sara Ali Khan and Twinkle Khanna all posted support, but only after Prime Minister Modi addressed the leak directly. The timing did not go unnoticed. Commenters joked that every star must share the same PR agency, since posts landed within hours of each other and read almost identically.
The unfollow button is not only aimed at the government's critics. Actor Vijay Varma reportedly lost followers after he backed the protest and criticized police action against students, which suggests audiences are willing to punish silence or disagreement on either side of the divide.
India is not the first location where this has happened. When the Block Out movement was held in 2024, Kim Kardashian lost hundreds of thousands of her Instagram followers and Taylor Swift over 200,000 in just a few days because of their refusal to speak about the situation in Gaza.
According to the specialists who study such cases of backlashes, figures usually return to normal when the new news cycle begins, which is why it is yet unclear whether this is a permanent drop for Bollywood but one thing has become clear that in today era of political aware youth demands their idols and celebs to be empathetic to the world's problem and use their platforms for good reasons.
What is different this time is the presumption that stands behind it. In order to maintain neutrality used to be a way to stay safe for any movie star. For some Gen Z who witnessed this demonstration of their peers through their smartphones, neutrality became something dangerous while choosing the wrong side can lead to loss of publicity and negative PR.
