A public holiday has been announced for 11 September 2026 due to the upcoming 18th BRICS Summit to be hosted in the national capital. While several central government offices, autonomous bodies and public sector undertakings will remain closed, the memorandum issued has not specified the closure of educational institutions on that day. Rehearsals and arrangements for the secure movement of VVIPs are underway.
New Delhi is hosting the 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit, where many countries, including Brazil, Russia, and Iran, will be participating. Extensive arrangements for security, traffic, and logistics are being made. The Lieutenant Governor has thus issued a memorandum on September 3 declaring that all government offices, public undertakings, and autonomous bodies will observe a holiday on September 11. Notably, this would be an extended weekend. Security is to be maintained around 10 hotels visited by delegates and 22 diversion points. The order for central government offices states that:
Recognising the magnitude of this event, the substantial logistical arrangements involved and to minimise inconvenience to the general public, it has been decided to keep the central government offices in Delhi/New Delhi closed on Friday, the 11th of September 2026 (12th and 13th of September being Saturday and Sunday respectively.

The officer further added:
Closing all government offices on September 11 is a welcome step as it will reduce the burden on traffic and security personnel deployed for the BRICS Summit. Fewer people will face problems on restricted and diverted routes, and congestion will come down.

The 18th BRICS Summit is scheduled to be held on September 12â13, where dignitaries from 26 BRICS member and partner countries are expected to participate. The summit will take place at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi under the theme âBuilding for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainabilityâ. Notably, BRICS has overtaken the G7 in terms of GDP, is expected to surpass it in trade flows, serves as a major contributor to global manufacturing, has become an emerging power in finance and technology, and has acquired greater weight through its new members and partners.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian are among the leaders expected in Delhi. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto are also expected to attend.
