The recent India-Africa Forum Summit, which was scheduled to take place from May 28–31 2026, was postponed due to the outbreak of the Ebola virus. In a joint statement, the MEA and the AU referred to the Ebola outbreak, stating that the decision was taken in view of the ongoing health conditions in Africa. Debates regarding its potential impact on international relations are ongoing while India has promised its full support to Africa in this crisis.
About the India-Africa Summit
The upcoming summit was an extension of those held in previous years, namely 2008, 2011, and 2015. It has a major impact on strengthening international relations between the two regions and focuses on multiple domains, including education, capacity building, diplomatic expansion, development, and defense. The theme of the summit is “IA SPIRIT: India-Africa Strategic Partnership for Innovation, Resilience, and Inclusive Transformation.” After the G20 Summit, the African Union plays a key role in this collaboration. The outbreak of the Ebola virus has postponed the summit by a year.

About the Ebola Virus Outbreak
According to the WHO, there have been 600 suspected cases of Ebola so far, along with 139 suspected deaths. Discovered in 1976, the Ebola virus can be transmitted from wild animals to humans and was initially prominent in Central Africa. The average case fatality rate of Ebola disease is around 50%, although fatality rates have varied from 25% to 90% in past outbreaks. It is believed that fruit bats of the Pteropodidae family are the natural hosts of the orthoebolavirus.
