For the last five years, we've been observing an exceptional and well-revered movement among the people of India for a few days leading up to its Independence Day. In schools, colleges, and workplaces, people come together in tricolour-themed outfits, decorate their surroundings in the colours of the flag, sing patriotic songs, and take part in cultural activities and celebrations. One can easily sense an air of pride, patriotism and an infectious ebullience.
This spirit can be traced back to an initiative launched in 2022, famously known as the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, introduced by the Government of India to commemorate the country’s 75th Independence Day as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
The Idea Behind Har Ghar Tiranga
The purpose is one: to shift the relationship with India's national flag from a formal, institutional connection to a deeply personal and familial one. Most people only see the flag at government offices or formal public events. Bringing the flag into houses makes the symbol of the nation feel close to a family. Hoisting it side-by-side with neighbours turns national pride into a shared sentiment. And thus, this campaign inspires citizens to embrace the Tricolour as a symbol of shared pride, bringing the spirit of Independence into their homes and communities.
What Makes Har Ghar Tiranga 2026 Special?
This year marks the fifth edition of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, which is being held from August 9 to 17 under the Ministry of Culture. The 2026 celebrations come with several noteworthy additions, making this edition more than just a continuation of the annual campaign.
150 Years of Vande Mataram
One of the historic elements of this year’s celebrations is Vande Mataram to be sung from the ramparts of the Red Fort for the first time on August 15, 2026. The inclusion marks 150 years of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s iconic composition and will be part of India’s 80th Independence Day celebrations.
Taking the Tricolour Around the World
Another addition to this year’s celebrations includes Surya Path Tiranga, a global digital relay of the national flag, introduced by the Ministry of External Affairs. As the sun moves from east to west across different time zones, Indian Missions and Posts will successively hoist the Tricolour, creating a symbolic relay that connects India’s diplomatic missions across the world. The initiative will see the celebrations travel from Fiji towards the United States, showcasing the Tricolour across continents. This adds a global dimension to the celebrations, taking the spirit of the Tricolour beyond India’s borders
