Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra finished second at the Lausanne Diamond League 2026 on Friday, August 21, producing a season-best throw of 88.05 metres. Chopra came extremely close to winning the event but missed the top spot by just 9 centimetres. Sri Lanka’s rising javelin star Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the competition with an 88.14m effort.

The result marked a strong improvement for Chopra, who returned to the 88-metre range after struggling to cross 86 metres in his earlier competitions this season. Although he missed out on gold, his performance provided an encouraging sign ahead of the remainder of the athletics season.

Neeraj Chopra Produces Season-Best 88.05m Throw

Chopra began the competition with a throw of 83.54m. Pathirage, meanwhile, opened strongly with 85.99m before improving his mark to 87.06m in his second attempt. Chopra then delivered his best throw of the evening in the second round, sending the javelin 88.05m. The effort briefly put him at the top of the standings and gave him a genuine chance of winning the Lausanne title.

However, Pathirage responded in the third round with an 88.14m throw, moving ahead of Chopra by just 0.09m. Neither athlete was able to improve on those marks during the remaining rounds, leaving Pathirage in first place and Chopra with silver.

Pathirage Beats Chopra for Third Time in 2026

The Lausanne result also added another chapter to the growing rivalry between Chopra and Pathirage. The Sri Lankan athlete has now defeated Chopra three times this season. Pathirage had previously finished ahead of Chopra at the Doha Diamond League and the Commonwealth Games. His Lausanne victory extended his unbeaten record against Chopra in their three meetings this year. For Chopra, the nine-centimetre margin was particularly significant because it was the closest of their three contests this season.

Lausanne Result Boosts Chopra’s Diamond League Campaign

The second-place finish was important beyond the medal. Chopra entered the Lausanne event seventh in the Diamond League standings with five points and was looking to strengthen his position in the qualification race for the season-ending Diamond League Final.

His silver-medal finish moved him into the top five of the standings. For jumps and throws, the top six athletes qualify for the Diamond League Final, with an additional place potentially available through a national or global wildcard. The 2026 Diamond League Final is scheduled for September 4-5 in Brussels.

A Positive Step for Neeraj Chopra

The 88.05m effort was Chopra’s best throw since his 88.16m victory at the Paris Diamond League in June 2025. It was also his strongest performance of the 2026 season so far. While Chopra will have to wait longer for another victory, his return to the 88-metre mark gives him a positive platform for the competitions ahead. With the Diamond League Final qualification race continuing, the Indian javelin star will look to build on his Lausanne performance and challenge for the top spot in his upcoming events.
