Commonwealth Games 2026: India's Golden Campaign Sets New Record

The Commonwealth Games came to an end in Glasgow on August 2, after 11 days. This year’s version was much shorter than before, having just 10 sports and not the 19 of the Birmingham edition in 2022. Famous Indian medal-giving sports were omitted: wrestling, badminton, table tennis, hockey, and shooting, so the Indian contingent needed to find medals through other sports.

They were very successful in that effort. India finished with 39 medals: 13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze, and taking into account the smaller number of sports this is among the greatest successes of Indian athletes at the Commonwealth Games.

Boxing accounted for the most medals. India managed to achieve ten medals in boxing, including seven gold medals, breaking any record for the number of golds won by any country in boxing in the Commonwealth Games. All women's titles were won by the five Indian boxers including Sakshi Chaudhary, Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, Priya Ghanghas, and Arundhati Choudhary while Sachin Siwach and Anhar Panghal took the men's titles.

Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu opened the gold medal tally of India on 26th July when she bagged her third-ever gold medal and won gold at these Commonwealth Games. Judo produced history for the country with Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh winning the Commonwealth Games men's judo titles.

However, in the much quieter edition of para-athletics, India's para-athletes are going to be back home with seven medals, including three golds from Sharmila Dhankar, Soman Rana, and Dilip Gavit.

Australia dominated the Commonwealth Games 2026 from start to finish, topping the medal table with an impressive 171 medals—well ahead of second-placed England and third-placed Canada. India finished fourth after edging past hosts Scotland, delivering one of its strongest performances in Commonwealth Games history.

The closing ceremony at Glasgow's OVO Hydro marked the formal handover to Ahmedabad, which hosts the next Commonwealth Games in 2030. For Indian sport, Glasgow 2026 offers an early sense of where medals might come from on home soil, with boxing, weightlifting and para-athletics now looking like genuine strengths rather than one-off surprises.
