The Asian Games opened in Nagoya amid an accommodation crunch after organisers skipped a traditional village. Even host Japan faced mixed-gender room mix-ups; India booked hotels and diaspora backup.
The Asian Games 2026 were kicked off in Nagoya last Saturday with a spectacular show of fireworks in Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium, yet this grand opening occurred only following several weeks of grumbling which could have cast a shadow over the entire sporting event. To reduce the costs, the organizers have opted to bypass the traditional Athletes’ Village and distribute about 17,000 athletes and officials into hotels, temporary container units located near Garden Pier, and Costa Serena, the 290-meter-long Italian cruise liner with 1,500 cabins.
The problems have not spared Japan's own contingent. The country's deputy chef de mission, Hisashi Mizutori, told reporters that credential delays left some athletes waiting for hours after arriving at the cruise ship, and that room assignments had in some cases put coaches in with athletes or mixed men and women into the same twin rooms simply because the headcount matched on paper.
Organisers say the shortfall stems from a late jump in participant numbers, from an expected 15,000 up to the current 17,000, after new sports were added to the roster. Japan's Olympic Committee says it lined up backup hotel rooms in the city in case swaps and negotiations cannot fix the worst cases.
India, fielding close to 500 athletes, has already shifted several of them out of the container huts and into hotels after chef de mission Sahdev Yadav said the delegation's original accommodation quota was cut without much notice. Around 2,000 Indian families in Nagoya, contacted with help from the Indian embassy, have offered to open their homes if hotel space runs out.
Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya met IOA president PT Usha in Nagoya to discuss the situation, while Yadav framed the disruption as an inevitable side effect of running an event this size, insisting the priority now is keeping athletes comfortable and focused on competing rather than dwelling on the mix-ups.
