Trump Raises Tensions With Stark ‘Annihilation’ Warning to Iran

US President Donald Trump issued a strong warning to Iran during his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, saying he faces a major decision over whether to pursue a peace agreement or take further military action. His remarks came as US and Iranian officials were also engaged in talks on the sidelines of the UN gathering.

Trump Delivers Strong Warning at UN

Speaking at the UN General Assembly on September 22, Trump said the United States could “annihilate” the Islamic Republic if an agreement to end the conflict is not reached. He presented the situation as a choice between reaching a deal that would allow Iran to rebuild and taking further action against the country.

Trump also maintained that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains a major US objective. He called on other countries to increase economic pressure on Tehran and isolate Iran.

The comments marked a sharp escalation in Trump's public rhetoric toward Tehran. However, they came alongside indications that diplomatic channels between the two countries remain open.

US and Iranian Officials Hold Talks

Soon after Trump's speech, US and Iranian representatives held talks in New York. According to reports, US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were involved in discussions with Iranian officials through mediators.

Trump later described the meeting as “very good” and said it lasted around three hours. Witkoff said mediators moved between the American and Iranian teams during the discussions and expressed hope that the talks would prove constructive.

The discussions are significant because direct communication between Washington and Tehran had remained limited after an earlier ceasefire broke down. Reuters reported that the latest contacts were the first such shuttle talks between the two sides in months.

Strait of Hormuz Remains a Key Issue

Another important issue in the negotiations is the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global oil shipments. Iran has indicated that it could reopen the strategically important waterway if the United States reduces military pressure and lifts its blockade of Iranian ports.

The situation has also affected energy markets. Oil prices have remained sensitive to developments surrounding the conflict because disruption around the Strait of Hormuz could affect global supplies.

Diplomatic Efforts Continue Amid Tensions

Despite Trump's severe warning, both sides continue to signal interest in diplomacy. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said Washington remains open to discussions with Iranian representatives if they can lead to progress on the nuclear issue and the wider conflict.
