Australia all rounder Glenn Maxwell stepped down from international cricket on Monday after a 14-year career that saw him two-time World Cup winner and one-day and T20 World Cup champion. He announced his retirement from the 50-over and four-day cricket on the Final Word podcast, which is available on Apple iTunes, and stated that he also would be leaving Victoria's cricket. He will remain a player for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, playing T20 cricket.
A Final Appearance Without A Send-Off
Maxwell played his final game for Australia in February at the T20 World Cup against Oman where he was bowled for 13 runs in three overs for 2 wickets. He had wanted a 'farewell' match at the MCG, but knew the selectors' thinking and there will be plenty of changes in the next two years and the 2028 Olympics are not far off.
In a statement of the decision, he said that it was "a sad, but a very expected one. He had been mulling his options for his home T20 series in Australia with England at the end of November, which features a fixture in Melbourne. He has played a total of 286 international matches and recorded 7226 runs and 136 wickets in 7 tests, 149 odis and 130 T20Is.
The Wankhede Double Hundred And Other Highlights
Maxwell is best remembered for his unbeaten 201 off 128 balls against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup in Mumbai. Australia were 91 for 7 chasing 292 when he walked in, and he batted through severe cramps to share an unbroken 202-run stand with Pat Cummins, who made 12 not out, and win by three wickets with 19 balls to spare.
In the same tournament, he hit the fastest World Cup century, off 40 balls against the Netherlands, and Australia went on to beat India in the final. He also hit the winning runs when Australia won the 2021 T20 World Cup. His five T20I hundreds equal the record held by India's Rohit Sharma, and he is one of five Australian men to score a century in all three formats, alongside Shane Watson, David Warner, Josh Inglis and Mitchell Marsh.
How The Exit Unfolded
The end had been visible for months. Maxwell retired from ODIs in June 2025, with his last 50-over match coming against India in the Champions Trophy semi-final in Dubai, and he last played a Test in 2017. Cricket Australia left him off its 2026-27 central contracts in April. He was also omitted from the T20I squad for the Bangladesh tour in May and June, along with Steve Smith and Marcus Stoinis, although chief selector George Bailey said at the time that their T20I careers were not necessarily over.
Maxwell had said in March that he was not ready to make a decision. Since then, he has played for Belfast Wolves in the inaugural European T20 Premier League and appeared in two One-Day Cup matches for Victoria, and he remains contracted to the Stars until the end of the 2026-27 season.
