Emraan Hashmi's Awarapan 2 has closed its opening weekend as one of the biggest hits of his career, and trade watchers are already using the word blockbuster.
The movie, which has Nitin Kakkar as the director and Vishesh Bhatt has produced it under Vishesh Films, has hit the theaters on August 14 that was a busy weekend as the weekend saw the release of Sunny Deol-starrer Batwara 1947 and Suriya’s Vishwanath & Sons, apart from Spider-Man: Brand New Day retaining its hold over the weekend. Though there was a tough competition, Awarapan 2 managed to emerge as the winner against the other contenders.
Awarapan 2 Box Office Collection
As reported by Pinkvilla, the film grossed approximately Rs 22.50 crore on Friday, Rs 33.50 crore on Saturday, and Rs 25.50 crore on Sunday, and concluded the weekend with the net collection of around Rs 81.50 crore in India. Other trackers report even higher numbers, near Rs 82 crore, which is common concerning this stage of a movie's lifetime before the final figures are released.
The film has done particularly well in the Hindi belt, led by Delhi-UP and Bihar, along with the Nizam circuit, both markets that have traditionally responded well to Hashmi's films.
Awarapan 2 budget: Career Turnaround After Years of Hustle
What makes the number stand out is Hashmi's own track record. Bollywood Hungama reports that this is now the highest opening weekend of his career, ahead of Baadshaho, which had held the record at Rs 43.30 crore. It also arrives after a rough stretch for the actor. Since Hamari Adhuri Kahaani in 2015, Hashmi went through around a dozen theatrical disappointments in a row, including Azhar, Raaz: Reboot, Mumbai Saga, Chehre, Selfiee, Tiger 3, Ground Zero and Haq.
From Cult Following to Box Office Success
The film's narrative trajectory has some unusual characteristics. The original version of Awarapan was launched in 2007 and was a losing venture. It gained a cult following only several years after the film's debut. A sequel to a movie that was a disaster turns out to be a hit (with the possibility of becoming a serviceable blockbuster) is truly uncommon, and the industry experts draw parallels with old failures like Sanam Teri Kasam and Laila Majnu suddenly getting popular with the audiences due to re-releases.
According to the industry media, Awarapan 2 has already become a super-hit, with potential to become a blockbuster if it delivers good results in the next two weeks. This period will be a mix of national holidays and competing movies like Toxic. As is usually the case with early predictions, these figures are merely estimates.
