The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Senior Men’s Selection Committee has announced a major overhaul to the national T20 International setup. In a press conference held at the BCCI Headquarters on Saturday, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed that Shreyas Iyer will take over as the new T20I captain for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games 2026 in Japan.
In a simultaneous development that rewrites Indian cricket history, 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been handed his maiden senior international call-up. The left-handed opening batter earned his spot following a prolific run-scoring campaign in IPL 2026.
The Captaincy Transition: Iyer In, Suryakumar Out
The most significant structural adjustment in the squad is the appointment of Iyer, who replaces veteran middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav. Surya, who captained India to an ICC Men's T20 World Cup victory just three months ago in Ahmedabad, has been left out of the squad entirely following a sharp decline in form during the recent domestic season.
Shreyas Iyer, 31, returns to the T20I format for the first time since December 2023. Addressing the media regarding the decision, Agarkar stated that Iyer’s extensive leadership background across multiple Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises made him the definitive choice to guide a transition-phase squad.
"He was very close to always being in the team over the last couple of years," Agarkar explained. "It's just that Surya and Tilak, the spots that he bats, were there, and he couldn't find a spot. So, now that he's found a spot, I think he's earned it. He is a standout candidate with enough experience now having led in the T20 format."
Top-order batter Tilak Varma has been named as the new vice-captain, forming a fresh leadership core that the selection committee intends to back long-term.

Historic Selection: 15-Year-Old Sooryavanshi
Breaks Records
While the captaincy shift dominated the tactical headlines, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s selection marks a historic milestone for Indian cricket. At 15 years of age, the Rajasthan Royals breakout star has become the youngest player ever selected for the senior men's national team, eclipsing Sachin Tendulkar’s 36-year-old record set in 1989.
Sooryavanshi forced his way into national contention by securing the Orange Cap in IPL 2026, scoring the highest total runs in the tournament at a strike rate exceeding 230.
Responding to inquiries about fast-tracking a teenager into a grueling overseas senior tour, Agarkar emphasized that performance data left the committee with no alternative.
"We've got high hopes of him, and I think he just has picked himself really," Agarkar said. "Obviously, there will be tougher challenges when you play for your country, but he's shown great promise and temperament. We're very excited with what he's doing in T20 cricket."
Squad Dynamics: Bumrah Rested; Prince Yadav Debuts

The pace department will feature significant changes for the UK tour. Senior fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the bilateral series against Ireland and England as part of his ongoing workload management. However, Bumrah will return to lead the bowling attack at the Asian Games later this autumn.
In Bumrah’s absence, Arshdeep Singh and a returning Harshit Rana will anchor the seam attack, supported by newcomer Prince Yadav. Yadav earned his spot alongside Sooryavanshi after taking 16 wickets for the Lucknow Super Giants. Spinner Varun Chakaravarthy retains his position in the squad alongside core World Cup members Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Shivam Dube.
The tour officially begins on June 26 in Belfast with a two-match T20I series against Ireland, followed by a five-match T20I series against England starting July 1.
