India delivered an outstanding performance at the Asian Para Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, as its para-athletes secured several medals and produced memorable performances. Among the biggest highlights was Sachin Sarjerao Khilari's gold medal victory in the men's shot put F46 event, where Indian athletes achieved a remarkable clean sweep by winning all three medals.

The achievement highlighted India's growing strength in para-sports and demonstrated the determination, discipline and talent of its athletes on the international stage.

Sachin Khilari Sets a New Games Record

Sachin Khilari managed to successfully defend his Asian Para Games' title by making a superb throw of 15.87 meters in his sixth and final attempt. This throw not only helped him break the Games record of 15.67 meters but also gave him the gold medal.

The significance of Khilari's victory lies in the fact that he had earlier managed to clinch a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. His success is the result of years of practice, technical development, and dedication.

The silver medal went to Mohammed Yasser, who threw the shot for 15.06 meters, while Parveen managed to take the bronze medal after throwing the shot for 14.94 meters.

More Gold Medals for India

The success of India did not stop at the shot put event alone. In the men's high jump T44/64 event, Praveen Kumar clinched gold after crossing the bar at 2.05 meters, setting a Games record. The fellow Indian athlete named Banti won silver with a personal best height of 1.92 meters.

Another gold medal for India came from Ayush Verma in the men's shot put F53 event, who managed to throw the ball up to 8.16 meters. In archery events, the young pair from India consisting of Sheetal Devi and Payal Nag won silver in the women's compound doubles event.

The country also clinched bronze medals from Anubhav Choudhary in the men's 100-meter T35 event and Rakeshbhai Bhatt in the men's 100-meter T37 event. Choudhary posted a personal best time of 12.72 seconds.

Recognition and Support for Para-Athletes

Government support, structured training programmes and improved sporting facilities are important factors in helping athletes prepare for international competitions. Initiatives such as the Target Olympic Podium Scheme aim to support eligible athletes through specialised training and other assistance.

The achievements received recognition from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who congratulated Khilari on defending his title and leading India's podium sweep. Various government aids, including training schemes and better sporting facilities, play a key role in preparing the sports persons for international events. Schemes like Target Olympic Podium Scheme strive to provide training and various other aids to the eligible players. Nevertheless, further investment in accessible infrastructure, coaching, equipment and financial assistance remains essential to help more para-athletes reach their potential.

A Victory Beyond Medals

India's success at the Asian Para Games is not just limited to sports. It defies stereotypes about disability and motivates youth to achieve their goals fearlessly.

Khilari and other athletes' success stories speak volumes about the significance of persistence, equality, and support. Additionally, there is a need to increase the visibility of such events through the media.

As India progresses on its journey of becoming an effective sporting nation, these feats will serve as motivation for many others. The gold medals, records set, and all-Indian victory on the podium are strong indicators of the power of hard work and talent.
