The development of the Clueless series has met with a roadblock, with the highly anticipated follow-up to Clueless no longer moving forward at Peacock. As first reported by Variety, the project, which centered around Alicia Silverstone reprising her role as Cher Horowitz, is now expected to be shopped to other buyers, signaling a shift rather than a shutdown.

Clueless Series at Peacock Faces Uncertain Future

The Clueless series project was originally announced in April 2025 as part of the platform's expanding scripted slate. While the streamer has stepped away, CBS Studios and Paramount are still said to be backing the concept, reflecting the continued confidence in the enduring appeal of the Clueless brand.

Industry sources cited by Variety suggest the project could attract fresh interest once reintroduced to the market, especially given the film's loyal fanbase and cultural recognition. The series was envisioned as a continuation, revisiting Cher's life years after the events of the original film, though detailed plot points remain under wraps.

CBS Studios Keeps Clueless Series in Play

Behind the scenes, the Clueless series carries a notable lineup. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage were attached to write and executive produce alongside Jordan Weiss, with Silverstone also serving as executive producer.

Original filmmaker Amy Heckering and producer Robert Lawrence were also on board, reinforcing ties to the 1995 film. Notably, Universal Television, which was involved at first, has since exited the project.

Streaming Strategy Raises Questions for Peacock

The decision comes amid a relatively quiet period for Peacock, which has not announced a new series order since mid-2025. While the platform continues to lean on titles like Twisted Metal and upcoming projects such as Crystal Lake, the absence of fresh greenlights has drawn attention within the streaming landscape.

This is not the first time Peacock has attempted to revisit Clueless. A previous sequel concept centered on Dionne stalled in development in 2020.

For now, the future of the Clueless sequel remains uncertain, but with established backing and recognizable talent, the project is unlikely to stay off the market for long.
