Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a major initiative for India’s youth during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort on Saturday, promising free online coaching for various competitive examinations.
The initiative is aimed at reducing the financial burden on students and families who spend heavily on private coaching. Modi said the government will bring together digital public infrastructure, talented teachers and educators to create a network that can provide free coaching to young people across the country.
‘Coaching Classes Burden the Poor and Middle Class’
Addressing the nation on India’s 80th Independence Day, Modi said coaching classes have become a financial burden, particularly for poor and middle-class families.
He pointed to the pressure on parents to send their children to coaching classes, with some families spending significant amounts on preparation for competitive examinations. Modi said the new initiative would help families save thousands of crores of rupees spent on coaching while allowing parents to remain closer to their children.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the social pressure surrounding coaching, saying some parents feel that not sending their children to coaching classes could put them at a disadvantage.
Government to Build Free Online Coaching Network
Modi said the government has decided to provide free online coaching for various examinations for the country’s youth.
According to his announcement, the initiative will combine India’s digital public infrastructure with the expertise of teachers and educators. The aim is to create a complete network through which students can access coaching without having to depend entirely on expensive private institutes.
However, several implementation details are yet to be announced. The government has not, as of now, provided a complete list of examinations that will be covered, the eligibility criteria, registration process, course schedule or launch date. Students will therefore have to wait for further official details before they can enrol.
Why the Announcement Matters for Students
Competitive examinations often require months of preparation, making coaching an important part of the process for many aspirants. But the cost can extend beyond coaching fees, particularly for students who move to major coaching hubs and have to pay for accommodation, food, travel and study material.
A free online model could reduce some of these expenses and make preparation more accessible to students living in smaller towns and rural areas.
It could also allow students to prepare from home instead of relocating to cities with established coaching centres. This could be particularly significant for families that cannot afford the cost of living associated with prolonged coaching.
The effectiveness of the initiative, however, will depend on the quality of teaching, study material, digital accessibility and the range of examinations eventually covered.
Part of a Larger Youth-Focused Push
The free coaching announcement was one of several measures focused on young Indians during Modi’s Independence Day speech.
The Prime Minister also announced a plan to provide Artificial Intelligence training to one crore (10 million) youth over the next year. He said the initiative would help young people develop AI skills and contribute to nation-building.
Together, the announcements place education, technology and skill development at the centre of the government's youth-focused agenda.
For millions of competitive-exam aspirants, however, the free coaching announcement is likely to be the more immediate point of interest. While the government has announced the broad framework, students are now waiting for clarity on which examinations will be covered, when the programme will begin and how they can access the free coaching.
