HBO has confirmed that House of the Dragon Season 3 will premiere on June 21, with the next chapter of the Game of Thrones prequel moving deeper into the growing Targaryen civil war. The upcoming season will consist of eight episodes and will release weekly through August 9 on HBO and HBO Max.

Based on the book Fire & Blood by George R. R. Martin, the series is set nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and follows the rise and internal collapse of House Targaryen.

'House of the Dragon' Season 3 trailer signals a darker conflict

The newly released House of the Dragon Season 3 trailer places the escalating conflict between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Aegon II at the centre of the story, signalling that the political fractures of earlier seasons are now giving way to open war.

The teaser adopts a notably harsher tone, with both factions appearing increasingly certain of their claim to the Iron Throne. A statement shared through the official Game of Thrones platform says, "There will be no doubt who the gods have chosen to rule," reinforcing the growing confidence emerging on both sides of the conflict.

One of the trailer's key moments features Daemon Targaryen telling Rhaenyra, "You now have power no man has ever wielded," hinting at the scale of destruction and authority that may define the next stage of the war.

The footage also introduces Ormund Hightower, played by James Norton. The character, who serves as the Lord of Oldtown and cousin to Alicent Hightower, appears to be preparing military support alongside Daeron Targaryen and his dragon Tessarion.

HBO expands the scope of the Targaryen civil war in HOTD Season 3

Season 3 appears set to move beyond court politics and into larger military confrontations, continuing the fallout from Season 2. The struggle between rival Targaryen factions is expected to intensify as alliances harden and both sides prepare for direct conflict.

The teaser also revisits one of the franchise's recurring themes surrounding the instability of the Targaryen bloodline. "They say every time a Targaryen is born, the gods toss a coin, and the world holds its breath," a voice says in the trailer, referencing the dynasty's long history of volatility and internal conflict.

HBO has not revealed the extensive plot details, though the material released so far suggests the series is entering one of the most violent phases of the adaptation of Fire & Blood.

Ryan Condal & George R.R. Martin return for 'House of the Dragon' Season 3

Ryan Condal returns as co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer for the new season, while George R.R Martin continues as co-creator and executive producer. Other executive producers include Sara Hess, Melissa Bernstein, Kevin de la Noy, Vince Geradis, David Hancock, and Philippa Goslett.

The HOTD cast for Season 3 includes Matt Smith, Emma D'Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, Matthew Needham, James Norton, Tom Bennett, Kieran Bew, Kurt Egyiawan, Freddie Fox, Clinton Liberty, Gayle Rankin, Abubakar Salim, Tom Cullen, Tommy Flanagan, Dan Fogler, Joplin Sibtain, and Barry Sloane.

With the series now moving into the bloodiest stretch of the Targaryen succession conflict, Season 3 is expected to connect the political downfall of the House Targaryen with the legacy later seen in Game of Thrones.
